Last week I was inspired by the wonderful fall colors here in Indiana to blow the dust off my DSLR camera and lenses, and start taking some photos while walking around town and while out cycling. I also added a photos section to the site and redesigned it a bit (poorly, probably).

I picked up an interest in photography when I was living in California and hiking almost every weekend. Interest has waxed and waned, and while I’ve never considered myself great I do think I have a decent eye. What do you think?

Gear

  • Canon 50D (vintage 2008, acquired 2018)
  • Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro (vintage 2006)
  • Canon 50mm f/1.8 “nifty fifty”
  • Canon 24mm f/2.8 (EF-S)

Those aren’t all of my lenses, but what I pulled out. I really like the Sigma as a general walk-around, with the simplicity, size, and low-light capabity of the primes. The Sigma seems to have a broken focus bearing, so lost the “macro” capability, but I generally don’t need it for walking around. I did take it apart to investigate, but couldn’t get to the bearings.

I’ve been considering picking up a full-frame 5D of some older vintage now that they’re available second-hand for a reasonable price, and really flex that Sigma lens and Nifty Fifty, especially in low light, which is a favorite subject of mine.
