Gallery: Color film developed with Caffenol
Apr 4, 2026
Having recently gotten back into film photography, I became interested in the idea of developing film at home, where caffenol- a family of recipes that use instant coffee, vitamin C, and washing soda to develop black and white film- is an interesting environmentally-friendly solution.
To test out the development process, loading film into the development tank, etc, I decided to test with a roll of inexpensive color film, which produces a sepia-toned negative. I also used this as an opportunity to test out a "new" camera that I had repaired, a 70s-vintage Minolta Hi-Matic E.
The results, which include a lot of artifacts and marks from some trouble I had handling the film (this is why it was a test), I found to be quite interesting.
